National Stadium — "Bird's Nest" National Stadium is the main venue of the 29th Summer Olympic Games in 2008. It is located in Beijing Olympic Green, accommodating about 91,000 audiences. It witnessed the exceptional Opening and Closing ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games and Paralympics, and the finals for Athletics and Football.
National Stadium is Beijing's famous landmark and is designed by world well-known Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, with an architectural area of 258 thousand square meters and a land area of 204 thousand square meters. For the main body of this stadium, the major axis is 332.3 meters, the minor axis 297.3 meters, and the height of vertex is 68.5 meters, the height of nadir 40.1 meters. The length of its roof opening is 185.3 meters and the width is 127.5 meters.
The main structure of the whole stadium is composed of bending and twisty box shaped steel beam, using 42 thousand tons of steel. Its roof adopts the special double-layer membrane design. For the ETFE membranes fixed between the top chord of the steel structure, the membrane of the upper layer can be used to adjust the degree of sunlight and has the functions of waterproof, dustproof and self-cleaning; while that of the lower layer has the function of sound-absorbing and can be used to solve the noise problem in the venue. The membrane structure of this stadium is built by Shenyang Yuanda Aluminium Industry Engineering Co., Ltd.
